Day 4 - Activity 1 - Winter Learning Journey

Activity 1: When you arrive in the south island, Curious Kiwi rents a shuttle van and drives your group from Picton (the town where the ferry dropped you off) to a beautiful beach on the opposite side of the island. The beach area is called Golden Bay and, at one end of the bay, is a stunning area called Farewell Spit.
Farewell Spit has been in the news recently as a number of whales accidentally swam into the spit and became stuck on the beach. They were unable to swim back to the ocean because the water was too shallow. Many local people tried to save the ‘beached’ whales. Please follow this Farewell Spit link to learn more about what happened. On your blog, describe what the local people did to try and save the beached whales.

WHAT THE LOCAL PEOPLE DID ??
The local people helped to trap whales back into the beach, They helped the Whales by being kind and putting them back into the ocean which was a smart thing to do but these people had a reason for doing it, and the reason why because they cared and loved these sea creatures VERY VERY much.

  1. Kia Ora Leka(Henrietta),
I like your response to what the local people did because it was very thoughtful. I hope you carry on blogging about the Winter Learning Journey and learn lots about New Zealand that you have never learnt and known before.

  2. Hi Henrietta,

Mikaela is right, your response to what the local people did was very thoughtful. I love how you mentioned how compassionate people were about the whales and you are exactly right, they loved the whales so much that they did not want to see them suffer. This was a sad time for New Zealand especially the people who live close to Farewell spit. I remember watching the news everyday and seeing people traveling from different parts of the town to try and help.

Thank you for sharing your summary with us. I look forward to reading more interesting facts.

    Goodluck!

    Jacinta
